It’s not only important for businesses to invest in signs so that customers know they’re in business, but also important to maintain them! Signs that are not maintained, or updated every few years, at best run the risk of looking a bit stale. At worst, poorly maintained signs can scare customers away. Heartland Signs and Graphics produces and installs signs, and also maintains and repairs signs. These are a few examples of poorly maintained signs I noticed during a 30 minute drive around town.
For example, this is a dry cleaner not far from our shop. The vinyl in their sign is cracked from too many years in the sun. While Heartland uses high quality vinyl and laminate for signs, not even the highest quality materials will last forever. This sign probably hasn’t been updated in 30 years or more. Even the best vinyl and laminate will only last for ten. I confirmed that they were still in business, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t. Were the business to invest in a new sign, they could easily recover their investment in a short period of time from an increase in customer traffic.
Here’s an example of another sign that could use some TLC. It’s a clever sign! However, rust from the chains and bolts has dripped down, causing the tooth to look like it’s severely decayed. While this is unintentionally humorous, it’s not a good look for the dentist, who has a thriving practice in spite of their business’ outward appearance. Changing out the iron bolts for aluminum and a simple power washing could make this sign look brand new again at a minimum of cost.
The next sign, or two signs, is a pylon sign for CVS and a local financial advisor. Surprisingly, CVS hasn’t had the sign panels refreshed. Normally, this would be easily noticed, if not for the condition of the financial advisor’s sign underneath it. The frame on the pylon sign is bent out of shape, and the polycarbonate panel has also seen better days. This is hardly the impression one would want to make on potential customers.
