POPULAR ADA SIGN PRODUCTS
Braille Signs
Braille signs are used to convey information to visually impaired people. Under the ADA, Braille must be on every sign that identifies permanent rooms or spaces, restrooms, exits, and room numbers. Braille must be Grade 2, which is a form of Braille that is generally used in most sign applications. Also, the dots in Braille are to be round, domed, or rasterized, and all the signs are to be mounted 48 to 60 inches off the ground so they are within reach of people.
Tactile Signs
Another important ADA requirement involves tactile signs, which feature raised characters that can be felt by touch. In keeping with the requirements, characters must be raised at least 1/32 inch off the sign surface and in uppercase letters. The font style must be sans serif, not italic, oblique, script, or decorative. All these signs shall be mounted in locations that are within reach. Generally, they are mounted on the latch side of a door.
Wayfinding Signs
Wayfinding Signs are very important in any facility for navigation. The ADA wayfinding signs must have raised tactile character and Braille. They have to be mounted in locations that give clear and concise directions to places such as restrooms, exits, and elevators. These signs must be mounted consistently and only at those decision points where people most commonly need directions. Wayfinding signs should also have a non-glare background along with high character-to-background contrast for better visibility.
Room Identification Signs
Room identification signs are required for all rooms or spaces that will not change, such as general offices, restrooms, and conference rooms. These should also have tactile characters and Braille and be mounted on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. If no space is available on the latch side, then mount it on the nearest adjacent wall.
Informational Signs
Finally, Informational Signs include information that a user should know about your facility, like policies, procedures, or directional information. Although these signs are not required to carry tactile or Braille elements, they still have some requirements, such as high-contrast colors with non-glare materials. Information on the signs is to be displayed clearly and concisely so that it may easily be understood by each individual, regardless of ability. We offer a range of materials and designs for informational signs, all fabricated to meet rigorous Americans with Disabilities Act standards while communicating your information effectively.
