Building a Better Wayfinding System for South Milwaukee High School

South Milwaukee High School had a state-of-the-art campus, but there was one problem people throughout the community knew well: finding your way around the building wasn’t always easy.

For students entering the High School for the first time, learning where everything was could take several weeks. Visitors faced an even greater challenge. Someone arriving for a meeting, event, or other reason might have little familiarity with the building and not know which direction to take.

South Milwaukee School District knew it needed better wayfinding signage. But this wasn’t simply a matter of ordering a few directional signs and mounting them in the hallways. The District first needed to determine what signs the school needed, where they belonged, how they should look, and how they could work together as one consistent system.

Heartland Signs & Graphics worked with the District to answer those questions and build a wayfinding plan from the ground up.

People Needed a Clearer Way to Find Their Way Around

Schools have a demanding job when it comes to wayfinding. Students move between classrooms and other areas throughout the day. Teachers and staff know the building well, but new students do not. Parents, vendors, event attendees, and other visitors may enter the school only occasionally.

The people who need directions most are often the people who know the building least. That was the challenge at South Milwaukee High School.

Despite having a modern campus, the High School lacked the signage needed to guide people efficiently through the building. New students could spend weeks becoming familiar with their surroundings, while visitors sometimes became frustrated trying to locate their destination.

The District wanted to solve the problem, but there wasn’t an existing school signage system to build upon.

As a smaller community, South Milwaukee also did not have a ready-made example from another District school that could serve as a starting point. Before new signs could go into production, someone needed to establish the structure behind them.

Start with a Plan, Not a Collection of Signs

Peter from Heartland Signs & Graphics worked directly with the District’s team to develop that structure. Together, they built a signage plan and uniform guidelines from scratch.

That distinction was important. A collection of individual signs can provide information, but a wayfinding system needs those signs to work together. The design, placement, terminology, colors, and overall appearance should give people a consistent experience as they move from one part of a building to another.

Heartland also needed to account for the High School’s identity. The goal wasn’t to fill a modern campus with generic directional signs. Heartland designed distinctive signage that complemented South Milwaukee High School’s existing brand while maintaining a cohesive appearance throughout the project.

The District gained a signage system created specifically for its school rather than an off-the-shelf approach borrowed from somewhere else.

From Planning Through Installation

Once the direction for the project was established, Heartland carried the work through the remaining stages. We designed, proofed, fabricated, and installed the new signage, managing the project from the initial plan through installation.

Proofing gave the District an opportunity to review the signage before fabrication. Maintaining the agreed-upon standards throughout production helped keep individual signs visually connected to the larger system. Installation then put the plan into practice throughout the school.

Heartland completed the project on time and within the District’s established budget. For a project involving multiple signs and locations throughout a school, managing those details as part of one coordinated project helped preserve the consistency established during planning.

Why Consistency Matters in School Wayfinding

Good wayfinding should answer a simple question for the person standing in the hallway:

Where do I go next?

The answer becomes easier to find when signs share a recognizable appearance and present information consistently.

Once someone understands how the system works, each additional sign becomes familiar. Students can look for the same visual cues as they move through the school. Visitors don’t have to interpret a completely different sign every time they reach another part of the building.

For schools, this can serve people with very different levels of familiarity with the campus. Returning students may only need an occasional reminder. New students need more guidance as they learn the building. Parents and visitors may need directions from the moment they arrive.

A cohesive wayfinding system gives all of them a clearer source of information. The signs can also feel like part of the school itself. Colors, typography, layouts, directional information, and other design choices can support the school’s established identity while still keeping directions easy to read.

That was an important part of Heartland’s work at South Milwaukee High School: the signs needed to guide people effectively while looking like they belonged in the building.

Less Frustration and Easier Movement Through the School

After Heartland installed the new wayfinding signage, the District began hearing positive feedback. Students, District leadership, and campus visitors have responded overwhelmingly positively to the new system. More importantly, students, faculty, and visitors can now move through the High School with greater ease and without the frustration that existed before the project.

For students, particularly those still learning the campus, the signs provide clear visual guidance as they move through the building. For faculty and staff, a defined wayfinding system gives students and visitors information they can follow themselves. For visitors, the school is easier to understand even when the building is unfamiliar.

The project also left South Milwaukee School District with something it didn’t have when the work began: a defined signage plan and uniform guidelines developed for its High School. Those standards give the individual signs a common purpose and appearance rather than treating each sign as a separate piece.

Does Your School or Facility Have a Wayfinding Problem?

Wayfinding problems aren’t always obvious to the people who use a building every day.

When you already know which hallway to take or where a particular room is located, it can be difficult to see the building from the perspective of a first-time visitor. The problem becomes more apparent when new students need weeks to become familiar with their surroundings or visitors regularly need help finding their destination.

That’s when it may be time to look at the signage system as a whole.

At Heartland Signs & Graphics, we work with schools and organizations to understand how people use their facilities before developing the signs that guide them. We can help establish the plan, develop consistent designs, provide proofs for review, fabricate the signage, and complete the installation.

South Milwaukee High School didn’t begin this project with an established signage template. Heartland worked alongside the District to create one specifically for its campus and carry it from the first plan through final installation.
